Social
Ministry includes the ongoing programs detailed below, as well as other
opportunities that may arise throughout the year.
Examples include: canned
food drives for the Emmanuel Lutheran Food Pantry, Christmas present collection
for children in need, and clothing drives for Lutheran World Relief. These events will be publicized to the congregation as they
occur, and participation and prayers for the endeavors are always welcome!
Circle of Prayer – Ruby Watson, CoordinatorWho:
Anyone.
What:
Pray for those in need.
When:
Every day, any time.
Where:
At home.
Why:
God’s creative, redeeming, and healing power can
come through prayer.
What:
Members help to plan, cook, and serve a meal at the
Emmanuel Lutheran Soup Kitchen on a Saturday and Sunday.
How often:
We do this three times a year.
Volunteering for this does not commit you to help each time.
Mobile MealsWhat:
Members deliver meals prepared by Swedish American
Hospital to shut-ins in the Rockford area on weekdays.
The route includes 2-6 shut-ins and starts at 11:15 a.m.
It takes less than an hour to deliver the meals.
How often:
Shepherd of the Valley is responsible for the meal
delivery for one week out of the year. A
member can choose to deliver on a single day or for several days during that
week. The routes are very well
organized and are designed so they can be completed in less than an hour.
What:
Members deliver meals prepared by Lifescape Services.
How often:
Shepherd of the Valley is responsible for the second
Monday of each month.
Love INC – Mary Lofquist, Coordinator
What:
This interdenominational agency coordinates help for
individuals needing assistance. An
informational sheet explains areas where volunteer help is needed.
If you would like to receive this informational sheet, please check off
the box on the green “Time and Talent” response sheet next to “Love
INC.”
Global Ministries – Ruth Anderson, Coordinator
What:
Collecting clothes and other baby items for Layettes
and school supplies for kits that are sent to refugee camps around the world.
Cutting and rolling bandages in preparation for use by the World Health
Organization. Help with Fair Trade food items for sale in support of the
Lutheran World Relief Coffee Project.
How often:
As needed.
Fall Food Drive
What:
Members collect food for the area pantries and
families who are in need.
Who:
Members are needed to deliver food to the pantries.
When:
Starting at the beginning of November and runs
through December.
Christmas Giving Tree
What:
Collect
Christmas gifts for needy children/families.
Who:
Members are
needed to set up the tree and collect the presents as they are dropped off.
When:
The month
before Christmas.
